Foam Board

Foam board is made from high-density polystyrene foam core. It's available in a variety of liner combinations of paper, plastic coated paper self-adhesive and aluminium. It is totally CFC free, pH neutral and contains no toxins or harmful substances. At LION we stock a range of foam board; standard, premium, super-rigid, and solid black.

Standard foam core board is light, durable and flat with good structural strength. It is suitable for many framing, display, photo, presentation and hobby tasks.

Premium quality polystyrene foam board with PE coated matt finish papers on both faces. The plastic membrane helps keep it flat even in higher humidity and during temperature variations. Suitable for direct printing and photo mounting. Also framing, display, presentation and hobby work. 

Super-rigid aluminium foam core board has four layers of paper, two layers of aluminium foil moisture barrier and a core of high-density white foam. These are carefully laminated together to make it super-rigid, strong and humidity tolerant. Perfect for large format heavy-duty mounting or direct UV-flat bed printing. in frame workshops and display studios.

Solid black foam core board which is great for displays and graphic presentations. Black foam board with black paper liners on both faces. The totally black finish gives an attractive, unique finish.

What is foam board used for?

Foam board is a lightweight graphic art board, with a foam core and liner papers on the faces. Foam board is light, durable and flat with good structural strength. Foam board is widely used for mounting and framing artwork. It has all kinds of applications in photo mounting, picture framing, displays and merchandising, printing, mounting and laminating. It is available in many finishes including adhesive backing and aluminium backed. Suitable for many framing, display, presentation and hobby tasks.

How is foam board made?

Polystyrene foam core is extruded, loosely rolled up and then left in a store for 30 days to allow it to out-gas. Specially formulated adhesives bond the polystyrene foam to the paper liners. Once the boards have been laminated they are left to dry and cool. Finally, an automated cutter creates the required sizes ready for packing.

How do I use foam board?

Foam board can be cut in a number of ways. When using a blade such as a Swann Morton scalpel or Stanley knife ensure the blade is sharp to give a nice clean cut. Sheet material cutters such as the Keencut Simplex and Keencut Evolution3 will improve your workshop efficiency when cutting foam board in larger volumes. Foamwerks cutting tools are recommended for cutting custom shapes for use in object framing and modelling. Store foamboard flat in an area where the temperature doesn’t fluctuate to ensure they don't bow.

What is kraft faced foam board?

One face is white, the other has a textured brown kraft face paper. Ideal for use as a backing board for picture frames, giving a traditional look. kraft faced foamboard is easy to cut with a knife or on a mountcutter. Cuts without releasing dust particles coated with formaldehyde which are associated with MDF boards. Non-toxic, pH neutral, CFC free foam board. This foam core board is suitable for backing picture frames, model making, digital printing for displays and hobby tasks.
