A great working bench surface for framers

Picture framers like to cover their framing tables with all sorts of materials. Mountboard taped down and changed regularly is very popular. Some use an offcut of short pile carpet to good effect.

The table surface needs to be firm when using a screwdriver and cutting glass. It must be naturally clean, so no marks are made on mouldings. It must be easily cleaned to clear away tiny stuff like pins and shards of glass.

Ribbed black rubber has lots of close-spaced stiff peaks to give very even support of the workpiece, be it moulding, mountboard or glass. It also has lots of valleys into which pins, shards and particles can drop into. All of which can be quickly cleaned out daily with a vacuum, a soft brush or a damp cloth.

Ribbed black rubber sheet is easily trimmed to table size. It can be butt-jointed to minimise waste. It can be glued down, but most people find that it soon settles down flat. Perhaps some gaffer tape to secure the corners.

Ribbed rubber sheet is supplied in rolls 915mm x 2500mm / 36” x 98”, 3mm / 1/8” thick.
