Liberon Tung Oil for protecting and preserving interior and exterior wood

Pure Tung Oil dries to a long lasting, hard wearing, matt finish. It is a natural, non-toxic product that contains no added dryers. The Tung Oil penetrates deep into the wood which allows the wood to age gracefully and develop a natural patina.

As well as being perfect for bare wood moulding, Liberon Tung Oil is ideal for use on food contact surfaces as it is non-toxic and resistant to water, heat and alcohol.

Preparation

• Ensure the wood surface is clean, dry and free from dust, dirt or any other contaminants
• Any previous finishes must be removed and the surface stripped back to bare wood
• Remove any existing wax finishes with Liberon Wax and Polish Remover
• Remove any existing varnish finishes with a suitable paint stripper or varnish remover
• Fill any holes, splits or gaps in the wood with a suitable wood filler

Application

• Always apply to a test area to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.
• Liberon Tung Oil is best applied with a natural bristle brush or lint-free cotton cloth
• Dilute the first one or two coats with up to 50% white spirit, to help with application
• Leave the oil to penetrate into the wood for 30 minutes, then wipe off any excess oil using a clean, lint-free cloth
• Allow to dry for 24 hours between coats
• Apply further coats of Tung Oil, reducing the amount of white spirit with each coat, removing any surplus
• Allow a further 24 hours to dry
• Apply the last one or two coats of Tung Oil undiluted, wiping off any excess
• It is recommended to apply a minimum of 4 coats - more coats will be required for porous or external surfaces. The more coats applied, the more satin the finish will become
• After the final coat has been applied and the surplus has been removed, leave for 24 hours and wipe over again to aid drying and remove any oil that may have surfaced
• For best results gently rub with Liberon Steel Wool between coats
• Leave the frame moulding for a few days to fully dry before mitring or joining
• Optional: once fully dry, the surface can be finished with a wood polish
